Build Up #11 – The New Leadership Muscle

The leaders I admire most aren’t threatened by AI. They’re the ones who see that the higher the leverage a tool gives you, the more your strategic thinking matters. That’s not a problem to solve — it’s a capability to be proud of building.

The leaders I admire most aren’t threatened by AI. They’re the ones who see that the higher the leverage a tool gives you, the more your strategic thinking matters. That’s not a problem to solve — it’s a capability to be proud of building.

There’s a shift happening that I’ve been watching closely over the last year. The people who once worried AI would make leaders obsolete are now realising the opposite:

AI makes tactical work abundant. That makes strategic thinking — the human skill of choosing what matters — more valuable than ever.

If you’re someone who takes pride in seeing the bigger picture, this is your moment.

Tactics vs. Strategy

Tactics: Write an email. Analyse a spreadsheet. Draft a social post. Create a report.

Strategy: Decide which email to send and why. Choose which metric matters. Know what post will land. Understand what the report is actually telling you.

AI can do the first column. Only you can do the second. And the better AI gets at tactics, the more your strategic capability compounds in value.

How to Build the Strategic Muscle

This isn’t a gift you’re born with. It’s a practice you build:

  • Practice asking “why” three times before asking “how.”
  • Before delegating a task to AI, write down what a good outcome looks like in your own words.
  • After AI delivers, ask: “What’s missing? What context does the AI not have?”

Strategic thinking isn’t a mysterious gift. It’s a habit. And habits can be built.

Why Systems Thinking Completes It

Strategy without systems is just a good intention. Systems thinking is what connects your strategy to execution — seeing how decisions in one area ripple across the whole.

In the Innovation SWAT book, we call this the FEES framework — understanding the layers of value (Functional, Experiential, Emotional, Social, Spiritual) that make a strategy land. It’s a way of seeing that turns good strategy into something people feel.

This is the muscle behind strong brands and products people genuinely care about. When you combine strategic thinking with a multidisciplinary team and the power of AI, you’re not just keeping up — you’re building a long-term advantage.

This is a capability I’ve been building for years, across design, brand, business, and technology. It’s not magic. It’s practice. And it’s available to anyone willing to think in connections, not just categories.

AI handles the tactics. You handle the direction. That’s the partnership of the future. 🚀

This way of thinking — connecting strategy, systems, and value creation — is at the heart of Innovation SWAT: The Superpower to Build — Accelerated by AI, Led by You. If you’re ready to go deeper, the full framework is waiting.
