Build Up #10 – Becoming an AI Leader

Every time you direct an AI tool, you’re practising a form of leadership few have mastered. This is the frontier of modern leadership — and it’s yours to claim.

Every time you direct an AI tool, you’re practising a form of leadership few have mastered. This is the frontier of modern leadership — and it’s yours to claim.

Think about your last workday. You probably asked an AI tool to draft something, summarise something, or help you think through a problem.

Congratulations — you’re already managing a hybrid team of humans and AI agents. Whether you realised it or not.

You’re not just using a tool. You’re leading a system.

For corporate leaders and SME owners alike, this is the quiet competitive advantage of the next decade. The teams that win won’t be the ones with the most tools. They’ll be the ones who can direct them with clarity, and who nurture talent that can move across disciplines.

AI Leadership Is Real

The skill that matters most in this new world isn’t learning to prompt better. It’s learning to lead.

Through my own experiments with AI agents and automation tools, I’ve noticed something: AI agents bring challenges that feel a lot like managing people, just with a few twists:

  • They don’t ask clarifying questions — they act on what you said, not what you meant
  • They need context that humans would infer naturally
  • They can’t always tell you “I don’t know” — which makes your own judgement even more valuable

This means the leadership skills you already have — clarity, delegation, quality control — matter more than ever. The same capabilities that make you a great leader of people are the ones that make you an effective director of AI. And every time you catch the AI’s confident-but-wrong answer, you’re doing the most valuable job there is: applying human judgement.

In the Innovation SWAT framework, we call this the USER process — a way of understanding, synthesising, energising, and resonating that applies whether you’re leading a team, building a product, or directing an AI agent.

The New Leadership Stack

The people who thrive in the next decade will have:

  • Breadth — enough understanding across domains to direct AI agents effectively
  • Depth — expertise in at least one area to know when the AI is wrong
  • Systems thinking — the ability to see how human work, AI work, and business outcomes connect

This is not a technical skill. It’s a leadership skill. And you already have more of it than you think.

When you grow a team that blends strategic, creative, technical, and people skills — and pair that with the ability to direct AI — you’re building something competitors can’t easily copy. That’s not a cost centre. It’s a long-term advantage.

You’re not just learning AI. You’re learning to lead in a world where you manage both people and agents. That’s the real superpower. 🚀

This is the kind of leadership capability we explore deeply in Innovation SWAT: The Superpower to Build — Accelerated by AI, Led by You. If this resonates, the full framework awaits you there.
