Build Up #4 — I Have No Special Strength

What if the thing you think is “average” about yourself is actually your superpower?

What if the thing you think is “average” about yourself is actually your superpower?

“I don’t have any special talent. I’m just average at everything.”

If that thought has ever crossed your mind, you’re in good company. Many people I meet who want to build something meaningful start from that exact place.

Here’s what I’ve come to believe: the world doesn’t reward the person who is 10% better at one thing. It rewards the person who can connect ten things that nobody else connects.

The Power of the Generalist

Early in my career, I wasn’t the most experienced designer in the room. I wasn’t the best marketer either. But I was often the only one who could sit in a design review, then walk into an operation meeting, then talk strategy with senior management — without needing a translator.

That’s not mediocrity. That’s a different kind of strength. And it’s exactly what the most complex problems require.

Your “Average” Might Be Someone Else’s Game-Changer

  • You think your Excel skills are basic? A startup founder drowning in spreadsheets would value your clarity.
  • You think your ability to explain things simply is “just communication”? That’s one of the most sought-after skills technical teams look for.
  • You think your empathy and people skills are “soft”? The best product managers I know built entire careers on that alone.

What feels ordinary to you might be extraordinary to someone who doesn’t have it.

A Simple Exercise

Ask three people who know you well: “What’s the one thing you’d come to me for?”

Their answers might surprise you.

You are not average. You just haven’t seen yourself from the outside yet. 🚀
