Build Up #6 — The Entry-Level Desert

The companies aren’t hiring the way they used to. That’s not a verdict on you — it’s a signal that the path has changed.

The companies aren’t hiring the way they used to. That’s not a verdict on you — it’s a signal that the path has changed.

To every student or recent graduate reading this:

I see you. You did everything right. You studied hard. You built a portfolio. You networked. And the entry-level opportunities you were told would be there… aren’t.

It’s not you. It’s the system. And the system is changing.

The Old Path Has Shifted

The traditional route was: get degree → get entry-level job → climb ladder for 40 years → retire.

That path was already fading before AI accelerated everything. Now it’s barely visible.

But here’s the truth that doesn’t get said enough: the companies that aren’t hiring are the ones stuck in the old model that shrinking their competitiveness. They’re fighting for their own survival amid AI disruption. Meanwhile, there are people building their own paths — side projects, micro-ventures, collaborations — are gaining experience no entry-level job could offer.

Your Real First Step

  • Stop looking for a job that validates you. Start looking for a problem that excites you.
  • Build something small. It doesn’t need to be a startup. It could be a newsletter, a YouTube channel, a tool for a community you’re part of.
  • Document what you learn. That becomes your portfolio.

You Have Something Most Experienced People Lost

You have time. You have energy. And you have the ability to see the world fresh — without the “that’s impossible” filter that comes with 15 years in a corporate role.

Don’t waste that advantage trying to fit into an old system. Build a new one.

The door that’s closed isn’t the only way in. Build your own doors.
