Build Up #16 — Your North Star

🎯 Students · First-time founders · iSWAT capability system

Innovation is not one skill. It is four capabilities.

Your North Star

The question I ask before any other

When university students ask me which subject to study, or which project to pick, I never hand them a list of hot industries or in-demand skills. I ask one question: what do you want your life to look like in ten years?

Most cannot answer immediately. They have been trained to optimise for grades, for admission, for the next credential. Nobody had asked them to think about what excites them at a level deeper than a job title.

So I push further. What kind of problem would you happily work on for ten years, even if nobody paid you? What would make you proud to tell your children you spent your life building?

That answer is your north star. Once you have it, choosing subjects and projects becomes natural. The ones that excite you are fuel. A student who follows genuine curiosity will work harder, learn faster and produce better work than one who picked a topic they secretly resent.

Four capabilities, four ways of thinking

Here is what I wish someone had shown me at university.

Innovation is not one skill. It is four capabilities, and each one is a distinct way of thinking and deciding. Not four job titles — four thinking disciplines you develop in yourself.

Strategic Thinking — the Strategist. Diagnose, decide, direct, discipline. Are we solving the right problem? What does the evidence say? What are we assuming that, if wrong, would break everything? This capability chooses the direction.

Design Thinking — the Wizard. Empathise, define, ideate, prototype, test. What would this look like if it were extraordinary? How does it feel to the person using it? This capability creates the value.

Story Thinking — the Activator. Awareness, interest, desire, action. Why should anyone care? What story does my customer tell themselves about who they become through this? This capability builds the connection.

System Thinking — the Technologist. Three layers of intelligence — market, customer, operations. How does this scale? Where is the bottleneck? What breaks at ten times the volume? This capability builds the infrastructure.

Each capability has one mastery domain and one bridging domain. The Strategist bridges to Design Thinking. The Wizard bridges to Story Thinking. The Activator bridges to System Thinking. The Technologist bridges back to Strategic Thinking. Four bridges, forming a closed loop.

Score yourself — honestly, not generously

The iSWAT Capability Scorecard asks you to rate yourself 1 to 5 on each of the four:

  • 1 — I avoid this mindset. It makes me uncomfortable.
  • 2 — I can do this when forced, but I resist.
  • 3 — I can operate in this mode, but it takes energy.
  • 4 — I am comfortable in this mode. It feels natural.
  • 5 — This is my superpower. I can teach others.

Then write the evidence supporting each rating, and name the growth edge — the specific capability you will develop next. Do not skip the uncomfortable boxes. Your two lowest scores are your curriculum.

The part that used to take twenty-five years

I have to be straight with you about something.

I spent twenty-five years learning to integrate these four capabilities. I did it the hard way — project by project, mistake by mistake, capability by capability. Designer first. Then brand building for billion-dollar products in China. Then a digital transformation across seven countries. Then coaching 45+ startups at HKSTP. It worked. But it should not take twenty-five years.

In the old days you had to find the work experience first. You had to get into the right company, hope a manager would let you cross the silo, and wait for the project that let you practise a capability nobody had trained you in. That was the gate.

The technology has changed, and it changes what is possible for you.

This is what userOS is being built for. At its core is an AI Coach — a life coach and business consultant trained on these frameworks — and behind it sit four iSWAT agents, one for each capability. You do not read about Strategic Thinking. You practise it. You run a real USER cycle on a real project while the Coach guides you phase by phase: helping you design your research, challenging your blind spots, designing experiments, monitoring what happens after launch. All while you build your first business.

The aim is simple: to help you build these interdisciplinary capabilities far faster than I did, by practising them with an AI Coach beside you, on something that is genuinely yours.

You still do the thinking. You still make the decisions. The Coach makes sure you never face them alone, and never face them blind.

Where to start

Score yourself today. Four capabilities, 1 to 5, evidence for each. The two lowest become your curriculum for the next ninety days.

The full iSWAT Capability Scorecard will be a free download when our new site opens in October. Signup the waiting list HERE and we will tell you the moment it is ready. And if you would like to be among the first to practise these capabilities inside userOS with the AI Coach, the pilot test waiting list is open now — that is where I would start.

Score yourself honestly. Your two lowest scores are your curriculum.
